This novella was disappointing in that it is a novella and not a big fat chonky epic.
First things first, I recommend this read. I read an ARC but have preordered via Amazon.
Walker’s prose is a pleasure to read. Walker exhibits talent that has a flare for descriptive stylings, realistic dialogue and delivering a rhythm that allows the pages to turn effortlessly.
I found my attention captured in the opening pages. The reader is placed squarely in an established scene with little explanation. The opening lines will demand your attention: “Crunching bones. Blood, dripping from spear tips, hammering down onto steel plate.”
Anticipation and curiosity are peaked immediately and sustained from cover to cover.
Josh does a wonderful job of building out the world utilizing the literary device of alternating “now” and “then” flashbacks. This works exceptionally well and I found my curiosity rewarded as the narrative advanced.
Themes include family lost, purpose found and belonging.
Elements that carry the work are: a captivating magic system, political strife, nations at war, varied races, betrayal, and intriguing characters faced with insurmountable odds.
Be prepared to experience a wonderfully wrought world.
